José Machado Pais

Economist and sociologist at the {Instituto de Ciências Sociais} (University of Lisbon) and Observatorio da Juventude (Secretary of State of Portuguese Youth); PhD in sociology (Lisbon) 1991. He has been lecturer in sociology at the ISCTE since 1977, researcher at the University of Lisbon since 1984. He has held several posts of visting professor in York (1989), WISE (1992) and Sao Paulo (1995). He is head of several projects on the sociology of everyday life, youth and leisure. He has published several dozen articles in specialist sociological journals, on methodology in social sciences, economic and social history, the sociology of young people and the sociology of everyday life and of leisure as well as numerous books.
